The Longest Johns– Johnathan “JD” Darley, Andy Yates, Robbie Sattin and Dave Robinson – got together in 2013 and started out singing shanties (the rock n roll of 1752) together in their kitchens. They have released three albums, graced the stages of international folk festivals, toured at home and abroad. And then… their track, Wellerman, put the wind in the sails of the Sea Shanty TikTok craze that has seen a 150-year-old folk song from New Zealand become a worldwide viral sensation. Their recording of the track took the Number 1 spot in the US and UK Spotify Viral Charts, and reaching Number 5 in the Global Spotify Viral Chart. It also made history by being the first a cappella shanty to enter the UK Top 40 Official UK Singles Chart. Since the phenomenal Wellerman moment, The Longest Johns gone on to sign with a major record label (Decca/Universal), play a number of prestigious UK festival slots including at Latitude (to a packed BBC Sounds Stage) and Beautiful Days festivals ahead of headline dates in UK including 3 x sell-out shows in their home of Bristol (aboard the Thekla, which couldn’t be more apt). 2022 will see a new album and many more exciting tour plans in the UK, Europe and beyond.
