Description

Included in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Tuvan throat singing originated within the ancient pastoral animism of the traditional nomadic horse riding shepherds of the Siberian steppe where the wide open landscape allows sound to travel great distances. Throat singers carry multiple pitches simultaneously, harmonize with waterfalls, and mimic the sound of wind swirling through rocks. “The first thing I realized when I first arrived in Tuva was to reaffirm what I had always believed but sometimes forgot. Sitting down in front of the Yenisei River, watching eagles and ravens circling above me, the water as wide as the Mississippi and the cliffs across on the other side… this is where throat singing comes from. It comes from a place where people never wanted to see themselves as anything separate from the contours of that very place.” - Arrington de Dionyso About the workshop: The purpose of this workshop is to help individuals free their voices. Cultivating an awareness of vocal ability and understanding the process for removing vocal limitations is a useful undertaking for any person. Participants will leave the workshop with an enhanced understanding of the expressive capacity of the voice across cultures, and the tools to expand their own voices beyond everyday speaking and singing. Participants will receive instruction in extended techniques, while gaining awareness of multiphonics as practiced in a number of traditional and experimental settings, with special emphasis on Tuvan throat singing. Instruction in these enriching techniques will be accompanied by discussion of aesthetic concerns related to the musical cultures covered. This workshop is ideal for people of any experience level and of special interest for those working in music, dance, theater, poetry, visual arts, healing sound, and ethnomusicology. Limited to 12 max. Testimonials: "Arrington brings a reverence for vocal expression that is contagious, to share the company of and learn from someone who has an inherent awe for anything that could come out of us, is encouraging and humbling simultaneously." "Arrington de Dionyso is a comfortable and patient teacher. He allows you to explore the more honest and primal parts of your voice and being. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who has a desire to step further into their own skin. As a performer and as a human being I have found this to be a raw, melting, educational, palatable and inspiring experience." About the teacher: Arrington de Dionyso conjures Utopic Spaces with multiphonic vocal work & minimalist instrumentation. It's shamanic seance meets rock and roll ecstasy; “TRANCE PUNK” combining traditional ritual trance, electrified experimental approaches, dancehall rhythms, gamelan scales and mystically inspired Indonesian incantations. Shocking and hallucinatory, and always aiming to channel Spirit. Arrington is the founder of the Olympia Experimental Music Festival. His paintings of trance dancers gracing many of his album covers have also been featured in Yves Saint Laurent designs.
