A little about our host, Julia...If you know me at all, you probably already know I love science fiction – I wanted to be an astronaut when I was little, I got interested in film because I loved learning about the technology behind it, I wrote my Master’s thesis on sci-fi film restorations, and today I’m a big Trekkie. While I’ve always been more of a movie guy, some of my favorite books are Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Allende’s House of the Spirits, VanderMeer’s Borne, and Michener’s The Source.”
Why she chose this book..."I first heard about The Memory Librarian in an interview with Janelle Monáe (she/they). In it, she focuses on laying claim to the future for Black people, queer people, and artists during a time when politicians attempt to erase their past and present. She speaks about political, spiritual, and personal connections to science fiction, in addition to the book’s connection to her 2018 album Dirty Computer. Understanding that many people see science fiction and Afrofuturism as unapproachable or niche, my hope is there will be a little something for everyone within all these intersections. I look forward to discussing the stories as well as the companion film and the music that inspired them.”
