The objectives of Programa SOL are: 1) to provide academic enrichment and bolster participants’ language and literacy skills 2) to affirm multicultural identities 3) to encourage a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. In June 2022, Programa SOL welcomed 23 participants to W&L's campus for 3 weeks of programming. Students received free transportation and meals from Rockbridge County Public Schools, free swimming lessons from FOR Swimming, and spent 2 days at the Boxerwood Nature Center. Next June 2023, we hope to expand the number of participants and the length of the program by one week. Your contributions will help make sure this is possible! Quotes on Programa SOL "The most rewarding aspect of Programa SOL, for me, was the relationships that were forged among our 8 W&L Program Assistants and the students who joined us for the pilot run. What a fantastic group of intelligent, talented and fun kiddos they are! We learned a lot and are very grateful for the support of our community partners and funding organizations—Rockbridge Community Health Foundation, The Gadsden Trust at Grace Episcopal, and the United Way Rockbridge Charske III Fund. We are already excited about reuniting with the students and their families for Programa SOL ‘23!" -Professor Jayne Reino “Seeing Programa SOL in action was amazing! The young students brought such energy to learn, create, and play every single day, and the Program Assistants matched that high energy. It was gratifying to see ESOL’s many community partners—Rockbridge County Public Schools, Boxerwood, FOR Swimming, the Rockbridge Regional Library—in the trenches to help make this program a smashing success. We’re looking forward to continuing our work with these children and their families and our community partners.” -Professor Ellen Mayoc
