Mt Baker Products is currently hiring for a Patch Line Helper on swing shift (1:30 pm to 10:00 pm; Mon-Fri, with overtime potential, including Saturdays). The Patch Line Helper has the essential duty of fixing imperfections in product with application of putty. At the direction of the supervisor, the Patch Line Helper will putty knots, use a scraper tool to fix lapped skin, and report quality issues with product. Other production duties will include plugging, end mudding, panel pairing and grading, as assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Inspect panels passing on an assembly line, identifying correctible marks, scratches, and dents in the panels; read ticket for product-specific putty; apply appropriate corrective patching/plugging materials to patch/putty defects, knots, splits, press indents and lap skin. Use infeed conveyer to roll units of plywood to patch line. • Use outfeed hoist to roll units out for pick up. • Apply saw dust to rustic panels. • Report any quality or productivity concerns, e.g., damaged, quantity-short or -over panels, to Q.C. and supervisor. • Report any downtime immediately to supervisor and maintenance. • Submit daily patch line report. • Clean during downtime and at the end of the shift. • Inspect equipment for safety concerns and report concerns to supervisor. • Promote positive team spirit; demonstrate good attendance and strong work ethics. Other duties may be assigned: • Inspection and correction of wood panel irregularities through plugging operations. • Matching, and pairing wood panels; loading onto carts. • Grading wood panels. • End mudding panels. • Assisting with hog fueling. QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years of age. • Entry level position; on-the-job training. Previous manufacturing (production, material handling, etc.) and/or experience working with wood and wood species recognition are a plus. Will train on identification and grading of wood species. • Ability to read and understand mill notes on tickets and work orders. • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. • Ability to maintain an organized and clean work area. • Ability to follow all standard work procedures in a safe and efficient manner. • Ability to identify safety concerns on equipment and machinery and to appropriately escalate issues to management; ability to use and promote use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Ability to accept additional work assignments and training to maintain productivity of work. • Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with supervisor and coworkers. • Ability to be flexible in work schedule; ability to work non-standard hours, including overtime and weekends, as required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Patch Line Helper is regularly exposed to loud machinery and moving machine parts. The employee is required to work in cold to hot temperatures, which vary with seasons; the environment may be dusty and damp. The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderate to loud; use of earplugs is required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee will be walking, standing, and engaging in movement throughout the majority of the work shift, and occasionally-to-frequently required to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Duties may involve a variety of physical activities, including operating a foot pedal; pushing/pulling large panels of wood; bending; lifting; stooping; turning; twisting; raising arms above shoulders and head; standing for long periods, and operating heavy machinery. In pairing panels, will be required to flip large panels of wood and load onto carts. Ability to use close vision for inspection of imperfections; ability to distinguish color and fine marks/defects such as scratches and nicks. Employee must be able to wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
