Description
This presentation will focus on how the media (tv, streaming series, movies, advertising, and social media) portrays substance use and the impact it has on teens. We will discuss how teens interpret the messages they see and how those messages can impact their behavior as it relates to drugs, alcohol and other risk-taking behavior. We will also cover how to support and talk with teens about engaging in healthy decision-making and choosing not to use alcohol or other drugs. Learning Objectives: Learn how prevalent substance use can be in the mass media; tv shows, streaming series, movies, music, advertising and social mediaUnderstand how perceptions surrounding substance use impact teen use or experimentationGain tips on how to talk with teens about those messages and engage in healthy decision-making in not using substances. This free event is sponsored by Maine Township's MaineStay Youth & Family Services and Chicago Behavioral Hospital. It is appropriateĀ for parents, educators, students, community members, and professionals and includes 2.0 free CEUs for social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and nurses. Check in will be from 5:30-6:00 pm. Advance registration is requested as seating for this event is limited. Presenter BioErin Tegge is the Prevention Program Coordinator at PEER Services providing direct prevention services to Evanston, New Trier Township, and Northfield Township. Erin has been with PEER Services since 2014 working in the prevention department. She has over 14 years of experience in the field of Social Work and has worked with youth, families and adults in a variety of capacities. Erin previously attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received her B.S. in Psychology. She continued her studies at the University of Chicago, where she graduated with a Masters in Social Service Administration (Social Work).
