Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet. Together, the siblings are dedicated to maintaining sustainable farming techniques, a relentless focus on wine quality, respect for Pritchard Hill’s natural beauty and the preservation of family ownership for generations to come.A YOUNG MAN’S DREAMIn 1967, Donn Chappellet dreamed of making a wine to rival the great First Growths of Bordeaux. Pritchard Hill was the answer to that dream. Considered a pioneer in the Napa Valley, Chappellet established the second new winery there after the repeal of Prohibition and became the 18th registered member of the Napa Valley Vintners.ABOUT GUEST SPEAKER JACOB JATAIt was the summer after college on Martha’s Vineyard that piqued Jacob’s interest in food and wine and ultimately set his professional course in motion. Working in fine dining at arguably the best restaurant on the island, L’etoile, brought him to aromas and tastes that he could never forget. When the summer was over, Jacob landed a job with a brand new fine dining restaurant, Ariadne, just west of Boston. It was there that he realized he wanted to work in the wine industry and grew from server to wine director and manager. The wine tasting experience gathered here was immense and he consumed books about wine regions, production, history, food pairings and the like. Then an opportunity to move to Hawaii presented itself and he couldn’t pass it up. After a year of surfing and working in fine dining restaurants in Honolulu, it was an earthquake that prompted him to move back near family in the Tampa, Florida area. While searching for work there he found something even better, the love of his life, his future wife. Then, the wine job he had been looking for finally came with a Gallo distributor where he received excellent sales training, mentoring and coaching as well as Sales Person of the Year awards. A desire to move back to the Boston area motivated him to look for job opportunities up north with his wife who had never even seen snow. They got married and drove up a week later to start in the heart of winter. Jacob excelled in sales and quickly rose to the top of the Martignetti distributor in Massachusetts and called on the best fine wine accounts in Boston. It was an amazing seven years and two beautiful children later that prompted him and his wife to sell their house, in faith, and move back to Florida to be near family without a job. A fortuitous meeting on his last day of work in Boston set the wheel in motion for what would become his dream job. Jacob is a Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers (Level 2) and a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) through the Society of Wine Educators.
