Water is life, second only to the air we breathe in its importance to our survival. The Great Lakes comprise over 90% of the fresh surface water in the U.S. Wherever we live in the Great Lakes watershed, we have an obligation to ensure its fresh waters remain safe and accessible to all. We come together today to celebrate what water gives us, acknowledge our reliance on it, and express our commitment to its protection. In particular we seek to join Indigenous leaders and other environmental justice activists who have fought for years to end the threat that the continued operation of Enbridge's Line 5 fossil fuel pipeline presents to the Straits of Mackinac. Today we add our voices to their call to shut down the pipeline and block construction of the proposed replacement tunnel.
The event will feature speakers, a sing-along, an "All Species Parade" to represent the beings at risk from Line 5, and a photo opportunity putting ourselves within frames depicting Michigan's Web of Life. Attendees will also have the opportunity to submit public comment to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement to be conducted under their auspices, a major step in assessing the true feasibility of the proposed replacement tunnel. We welcome everyone interested in promoting the well-being of all those who rely on the purity and safety of these waters to join us and to submit a public comment.
