CAHC organizes exhibitions, events, discussions, and makes publications. It was founded by Illia Yakovenko in 2021 during his time as a visitor on the unceded homelands of Chinook, Kalapuya, Molalla, and other indigenous peoples—in what is currently known as Portland, Oregon—with thoughts of people of eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Illia Yakovenko is an artist from Ukraine and the founder of Center for Art and Human Cooperation (CAHC). He is a Fulbright recipient and an MFA candidate in Art and Social Practice MFA at Portland State University. CAHC is an expression of Illia’s commitment to support mutual understanding and solidarity through art and culture at cross-cultural and international level. Illia grew up in Mariupol, where he spent hot summer days swimming and sailing at the sea. The first Russian invasion of 2014 turned Mariupol and eastern Ukraine into a frontline. Since then, Illia directed his art practice to address conflict, heal, imagine, and build an equitable, inclusive, and safe future. THE SEA OF MARIUPOL PROGRAM: The Sea of Mariupol celebrates and commemorates the city of Mariupol, Ukraine with a series of public community-oriented events that make symbolic connections between Mariupol and Portland. These events make space for international mutual learning and exchange, raise awareness of what’s happening in Ukraine and encourage personal connection across different life experiences through stories. In addition to creating awareness and understanding, the events and activities invite folks to support Mariupol and its people. Donations and other resources will be directed to provide support to Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced people, humanitarian relief for the city and the country, and support for Ukrainian cultural organizations whose missions are to preserve art and support artists affected by the war. ENGAGE! - CAHC is open for cooperation with organizations, artists, and individual community members locally and internationally. If you have ideas, reach out to us with a brief description or to simply say hi. Currently we are especially interested in collaborating with community, public, and art organizations in the Portland metro area. Email: [email protected] http://instagram.com/cahc.art
