Description

This October, The Frida Cinema is proud to present Beautiful Monsters: A Guillermo del Toro Film Retrospective and Tribute Art Show, featuring all eleven of the Academy Award-winning director’s feature films; three acclaimed films he produced; and seven films that served to inspire him. The series continues at The Frida Cinema with The Night of the Hunter, Charles Laughton's nightmarish 1955 thriller. Great Depression-era West Virginia: misogynistic serial killer Reverend Harry Powell styles himself as a traveling preacher, murdering the widows he marries for their money. During a stint in jail for driving a stolen car, Powell shares a cell with Ben Harper, an impoverished father who killed two men during a robbery in a desperate attempt to provide for his children. After failing to get his cellmate to reveal the location of the money before his execution, Powell makes his way to Harper’s hometown in order to woo his widow, Willa. But young John Harper, intent on keeping his father’s secret, suspects that this charismatic man of God is much more wicked than anyone realizes.
