Description
Hi bay area community!
I am a teacher at a high school in Hayward, and I need some support from the local community. I am part of a team of teachers who are working together to design lessons around the climate crisis for our students--specifically, lessons that steer away from "We're all gonna die and there's no hope" to "There are many solutions out there. Let's figure it out together!"
The activity that I intend to do is a little outside of the budget for our team-- we will be making terrariums. I have the funding for all the materials.... except for the plants. I also don't want to order plants through walmart or amazon (CO2 emissions from shipping) when I know there are many amazing nurseries and plant enthusiasts all over the bay!
I am new to terrariums, but I understand I need some small plants that I can propagate into smaller pieces. In total, we will be making 24 terrariums across all my classes. Ideally I'd like each terrarium to have at least 2 plants. According to my googling, here are some plants that I think would be nice to have for our terrariums (they will be 64 oz mason jars):
Pilea glauca (silver sparkle)
Pilea depressa (baby tears)
Pteris cretica 'Albolineata' (silver ribbon fern)
Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffi' (lemon button fern)
Any fern with small leaves, really
Ficus pumila (creeping fig)
Peperomia 'Rosso' (radiator plant)
Selaginella kraussiana (golden clubmoss)
Do you have some ideas for other plants? Suggest them to me!
If you are interested in helping me, or if you can connect me with someone who you think can help, please email me.
I can come pick up the plants from anywhere in the bay. I don't feel it's fair for me to ask for you to give me the plants for free, I can pay some money, but this is out of my own pocket. If you want to donate them to me for free though, I will not say no :)
