New 45-Day Closure Along I-190 In Worcester Starts Soon

WORCESTER, MA — The flip side of a long I-190 exit ramp closure in Worcester starts soon. On Oct. 4, MassDOT will close the southbound on-ramp to I-190 and I-290 from Route 12 and West Boylston Street for 45 days. During the detour, MassDOT will be rebuilding and resurfacing I-190 bridges that carry traffic over the Providence and Worcester Railroad line that runs under the freeway just south of Gold Star Boulevard. In early August, MassDOT closed the northbound I-190 exit 1 to Gold Star Boulevard and West Boylston Street. That exit will reopen Wednesday. The new 45-day detour that starts Oct. 4 will take drivers to northbound I-190 and then to a U-turn at Exit 2, where the Frontage Road on-ramp provides access to southbound I-190 and I-290. MassDOT will also have to close parts of I-190 this week during overnight hours to prepare for the longer Oct. 4 closure. Those disruptions include: On Tuesday and Wednesday nights starting at 10 p.m., the ramps from I-290 eastbound to I-190 northbound and to Route 70 (Burncoat and Lincoln Streets) will be closed. The ramps will reopen at 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights starting at 9 p.m., MassDOT will close lanes along I-190 northbound near exit 1. Those lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each day.On Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 starting at 10 p.m., MassDOT will close lanes along I-190 southbound in near exit 1 between. Those lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each day.
