Hear from experts in the Kansas City area in the diabetes space, connect with other families, and meet with JDRF staff and local diabetes vendors at this educational summit. SPEAKERS:Caleb Herbst, Board President, will give a chapter update and overview. Dr. Blake Cooper will give a JDRF research update. Blake Cooper is a graduate of The Chicago Medical School as well as the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and completed his residency and retina fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He has practiced in the Kansas City area for the last 20 years and is the managing partner of his practice, Retina Associates, LLC. He is a member of many professional organizations and societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Diabetes Association, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Society of Retina Specialists, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and various state and local groups. Along with his wife and 2 daughters, they enjoy travel, skiing, running, and swimming. Most importantly he has been actively a part of the Kansas and Missouri Chapter of the JDRF since his oldest daughter was diagnosed with T1D a decade ago. Stephenie Klotzbach will speak about the mental health challenges with type 1 diabetes focusing on navigating anxiety and burnout with chronic illness. This includes caregiver support. Stephenie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist here in the KC metro. Growing up, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 8, and her other half is a T1D of 28 years. Both living with and experiencing chronic illness from a different viewpoint has instilled a passion within her to both connect and advocate for those oppressed by their own chronic illnesses. In her free time, you can find her at chiefs games, exploring new restaurants with her husband and snuggling with her obnoxious and sweet boxer Jordy. Dr. Mark Clements will present about Children's Mercy and the Rising T1DE Alliance along with other local research. Dr Mark Clements, MD PhD is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Pediatric Endocrinologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He holds the Rick and Cathy Baier family endowed chair in endocrinology and has been supported by numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Helmsley Charitable Trust and JDRF. He has authored or co-authored nearly 100 scientific manuscripts. From 2016-2019, he served as Pediatric Chair of the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry. He was a founding member of the T1D Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative and served as the Data Science Co-Lead from 2016-2022. His research interests include type 1 diabetes prevention, behavioral interventions in youth and their parents, clinical trials of advanced technologies and digital therapeutics, and the use of big and small data alike to improve type 1 diabetes care via advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence.
