Description
October is National Farm to School Month!
Emerson Montessori PTA in partnership with Across the Prairie: An Oklahoma-Native Plant Nursery and Three Springs Farm will be hosting a “Gardening How To” basic education class incorporating native pollinators.
WHAT IS FARM TO SCHOOL?
Farm to school enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by enhancing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education sites. Farm to school implementation differs by location but always includes one or more of the following:
• Procurement: Local foods are purchased, promoted and served in the cafeteria or as a snack or taste-test
• Education: Students participate in education activities related to agriculture, food, health or nutrition; and
• School gardens: Students engage in hands-on learning through gardening.
We’ll learn about the basic why and how of growing a pesticide-free garden, as well as tips on how to start preparing next year’s garden now, from Emily Oakley of Three Springs Farm. Emily was formerly a representative on the USDA’s National Organic Standards board. Sarah Cross of Across the Prairie Nursery will also be on hand to speak briefly about incorporating native pollinator beds in your garden, and will have some native plants to get you started.
Proceeds will be donated to Emerson Foundation Farm
