Pearl Morissette is quietly making some of the most exciting wines in North America in the cool climes of the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. Native to Quebec, Francois put together some of the best wine lists in Canada as a sommelier before moving to France for seven years to work in the vines and cellars of such illustrious names as Henri-Gouges in Nuits-St. Georges, Domaine Roulout in Meursault, and Frederic Magnien in Chambolle Musigny - he also received a degree in oenology from the University of Dijon. On return to Canada, he quickly found an opportunity with a developer friend, Mel Pearl, to apply his knowledge in the truly cool climate terroirs of the Niagara Peninsula. Committed to making honest wines with a real sense of place, Pearl Morissette has two organic vineyards in the Twenty Mile Beach and Creek Shore VQAs. Always in deference to nature, Francois doesn’t like to do too much in the winery – the wines are fermented naturally in a variety of vessels, are never fined or filtered, and sulfur is added in miniscule amounts if at all. The wines feel at once classic, vital, and honestly delicious.
