To say that something invokes the uncanny is to describe an experience of something familiar, or even something secret, encountered in an unfamiliar context. The uncanny is effectively a kind of tension between recognition and its absence. Producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Bailey Miller’s debut full-length, Still Water, relies on just such a tension, and therefore achieves a sense of the uncanny in a languid hypnagogia. Over the course of nearly an hour, Miller’s clear voice gently and starkly plays against a spectrum of sounds: harp, violin, banjo, autoharp, software synths, pulsing drum machine. The album weaves between genres, never growing used to any certain aesthetic homes, drawing from landscapes that are ambient, folk, singer-songwriter, electronic, shoegaze, dance, and classical, yet experimental at their core. Still Water is a record made over many places and through many changes, and it is all the more for this fact that it is an act of recognition –– of the familiar, the secret –– of what’s to be found uncannily within. The Still Water release show will be happening on October 8 w/ beloved guests: Isaac Joel (of Pomegranates), Turtledoves (of the Soil & the Sun), and Brianna Kelly (of Soften, A Delicate Motor). It will be taking place at the Centennial Chapel of Christ Church Cathedral at 318 E 4th St in downtown Cincinnati. It will be an earlier show! Doors will open at 6:30 and music will start at 7pm (literally). How to access: The Centennial Chapel is accessible via Sycamore St. There is a separate entrance here to the left of the red doors. Here you'll find a ramp that will take you to the chapel entrance. It is fully wheelchair accessible. You may also enter the church via the main entrance at 318 4th St. Bailey Miller is a solo producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose music explores unusual combinations of textures, the depths of existential searching, and vulnerable singer-songwriting. As a founding member of the band Pomegranates, Isaac cut his teeth touring with artists such as Phantogram, Islands, and Ra Ra Riot. He currently writes solo music and composes for commercial libraries, as well as producing and recording other artists, all from his home base at the Marble Garden.
