North Andover Conservation Warns Of Invasive Water Lettuce

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — The North Andover Conservation Department recently asked residents to watch out for water lettuce, an invasive aquatic plant native to South America. Water lettuce is often used in koi ponds, aquariums and other features, the Department said, but it can easily spread to the wild, where it forms a dense layer on lakes and streams and crowds out native plants and animals. Water lettuce is not a state-listed invasive species, as it is not established in the state. "It does have the potential to spread by seed and become an annual invasive plant," the Department said. Anyone who thinks they have spotted the plant should reach out to the Conservation Department at 978-688-9530. "We have the best success controlling invasive species when we find and manage them early," the Department said. "Even though this plant is not a state listed species, we urge you not to purchase it for your koi ponds, water features or aquariums."
