Institute DescriptionAs participants in our Black Teacher Leadership and Sustainability Institute (BTLSI), Black teachers and educators will deepen commitment and agency in their work while developing strategies for leadership and sustainability. Attendees will receive caring guidance and facilitation to collaboratively explore the personal and professional challenges they face as Black school-based educators. Through this experience, participants will have an opportunity to share, reflect, and set intentions for how to lead and thrive as Black educators in their different contexts. This Black affinity professional development offering provides a space to build community with and learn from Black teachers and educators from across the country. Participants will learn, examine and discover: Frameworks and protocols that foster equity-centered teaching, learning, and leadershipThe implicit and explicit work of Black teachers in the United StatesHow to navigate individual and organizational dynamics that impede the development and sustainability of Black teachersDeepened understanding of socio-political contexts and how racial oppression effects education policies and practice. We believe working toward liberation means understanding how oppression plays out!The importance of emotional intelligence and wellness for Black teachers in schoolsConcrete skills for health, wellness, and leadership in challenging contextsResearch, strategies, and tools to support the leadership and sustainability of Black teachers in an oppressive systemDates and Times:Thursday, October 20th, 4:00pm to 8:00pm Friday, October 21st, 8:30am to 4:30pm Saturday, October 22nd, 8:30am to 4:30pm **Participants must be able to attend all three days** Location:Throop Studio,1500 North Throop St. Chicago Illinois Travel and Lodging:Throop Studio space is located in the West Town of Chicago, ILThe space offers plenty of off-street parking close to the building as well as ADA Parking in the rear of the buildingThe āLā train is close to the studio, see Chicago Transit Authority for additional details. There are several hotels nearby such as Hyatt Place Chicago / Wicker Park and The Robey. Accessibility:3000 square ft space with 12 foot ceilings Clear pathways between chairs and tablesThere are a few steps to walk up into the space, if you need ramp accommodations, please indicate that in your registration form Full ADA compliant and gender neutral restroomScent free spaceAdvance draft of our slide deck provided at least 24 hours before the sessionPrint outs will be available to follow along during our sessions If you have any dietary limitations or allergies, please share them with us in your registration formCost:$800/participant includes: facilitation; resources; Thursday dinner; Friday breakfast & lunch; Saturday breakfast & lunch Who should attend?Black teachers and educators working in district, charter, private and independent TK-12 schools who are able to attend the full course. We encourage prospective attendees to reach out to principals/administration to request use of professional development funds to pay the registration fee; we do not expect Black teachers to personally pay for this offering. We know that teachers are sometimes not aware of PD funds or are hesitant to ask, so we encourage you to advocate for yourself and your leadership development by learning your school's process of accessing funding.
