The 5th annual Girls' Voices Now film screening is a celebration of the 13 girls who graduated from our intensive summer training program. The screening will showcase their social-change films, highlighting critical issues such as period poverty, double standards, gender roles, and generational trauma. EVENT PROGRAM: The event will begin at 7:00pm and conclude at 10:00pm, following the Filmmaker Q&A and Empathy to Action Booths. Parking is included with the ticket. ABOUT THE FILMS:The Bloody Truth: A Look Into Period Poverty delves into the lived-experiences of bodies who menstruate while experiencing poverty and the efforts of organizations and individuals who work to meet these needs. Filmmakers: Zulema Villanueva (16), Nallely Meza(16), Maya Shtangrud (15) How to Be a Girl addresses the ongoing challenges women and girls face within schools and the education system. Filmmakers: Sofia Pena (15), Bernadette Berbon (15), Juliette Lin (15), Jacqueline Aguirre (16) We Can Do It tackles the double standards that boys/men and girls/women experience. Filmmakers: LaNiya Wallace (14), Camila Sandoval (14), Xiuranis Aguilar (17) Hija Callada (The Silent Daughter) is a film about the impacts of Generational Trauma and a look at how speaking out can begin to make a difference. Filmmakers: Francesca Krikorian (17), Stephanie Barcenas (16), Julissa Montiel (16) ABOUT THE GIRLS' VOICES NOW PROGRAM:Girls' Voices Now is a youth development program which empowers girls 14-18 from under-resourced communities of the greater Los Angeles area to find, develop, and use their voice for positive social change through filmmaking. Girls' Voices Now is hosted by Women’s Voices Now - a Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization which uses film to drive positive social change that advances women’s and girls’ rights.
