Description
MEDFORD, MA — The Traffic Commission will take up a series of proposed safety changes at the intersection of Main and South Streets at its meeting this month. MassDOT announced a plan last fall to move forward with temporary improvements at the notoriously dangerous intersection while the city and state continue to work toward permanent changes.
Proposed improvements include repainting lane markings on both streets and placing temporary barricades to define new turn restrictions. New proposed traffic patterns include:
On South Street: Vehicles may turn left or right onto Main Street but will be restricted from traveling straight onto I-93.On Main Street Northbound (toward Medford Square): Lane markings will better define one "straight" lane and one "right turn" lane to I-93.On Main Street Southbound (toward Somerville/Boston): Left turns to I-93 will be restricted. MassDOT identified the intersection as one of the top 200 crash locations in the state. The temporary changes are designed to improve safety, while providing the flexibility to make adjustments during the pilot.
The public is invited to attend the Traffic Commission meeting Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. via Zoom:
