Materiality, figuration, and urban non-objects play out on the canvas in unexpected, vibrant ways. Explore new waves of image making through the visions of Joshua Dodson, Kyle Hanson, Loc Huynh. Artist Statements Loc Huynh - Through painting, I use materiality to describe the material world. By rooting my practice in visual culture and art history, I seek to extend the meaning of images beyond their initial form. The coalescing of opposing and complimentary formal elements accentuate the visual and contextual friction. This allows the work to exist in an ambiguous state. Seen together, my works appear disparate, but they suggest alternative meanings through association with one another. The works can exist on their own, but engage in dialogue when juxtaposed against each other. Although about specific occurrences, the works afford the viewer their own interpretations. Joshua Dodson - Throughout Dodson's formal years in school, he took various art classes taking what he could from each class continuing to try and figure out what his path would be. In 2001 a school mate introduced him to the mysterious and intriguing sub- culture of graffiti. He became obsessed with the science of letterforms and the complex ways of "WildStyle''. Meeting other "writers'' from school he quickly began learning the ways of the practice from being a "toy'', a newbie with no skill or style to being able to produce a fresh body of work(tags,throw-ups,burners,etc.) As such, the new way of expressing himself brought the aspect of anonymity. Getting your name up for people to see but still being completely unknown except to the people in the know. Over the years Joshua has studied many different interpretations of artworks including futurism, architecture, modern art, constructivism, minimalism and pure abstract expressionism, while still keeping in check the roots of his current works. Kyle Hanson - Hanson’s work explores the human condition as experienced through object adaptation. Rather than painting the figure, he is interested in the human presence as felt through objects. Objects are key to the work, Hanson explains, because they are more reliable than the human figure, reflecting human sensibilities without the ability to express freewill. Consequently, by replacing the human figure with objects, we are unable to merely observe human interaction but are elicited to engage with the objects on our own in order to give these objects narrative. Objects, in their own right, reflect to us our own intentions. As a fan of Marcel Duchamp’s work, Hanson also pokes fun at the object while rejoicing in the human connection. Yet, if Duchamp’s work rejects retinal pleasure in favor of the conceptual experience, Hanson’s work enthralls the visual sensory by dematerialization of the object. In his painting Smucker’s for example, a bouquet of purple flowers placed in a Smucker’s jelly jar is loosely painted with smears and gouges of raw paint that bring to mind the act of spreading jelly – reminiscent of home life and upbringing. The surface of the reflective glass jar is broken up in tessellate brushstrokes, exposing the contents of the jar as well as the painted layers beneath the surface.
