We are excited to bring together community members to have a conversation around implicit bias.
What is implicit bias and why is it a problem?
Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, how we act, and decisions we make without thinking. Implicit bias can make us to act (without wanting to) in ways that are not consistent with our values. Although you do not choose to have an implicit bias, you can choose to be aware of it and do something about it.
We are looking to bring together families, community members and the supports systems in their neighborhoods to have an honest talk about how day to day interactions contribute to implicit bias. Studies suggest that implicit bias is most likely a contributing factor to racial health disparities, and these have a great impact on our families, we know from statistics that:
Black Moms are over 3 times more likely to die from issues related to pregnancy than white moms (CDC)Black children have a 500% higher death rate from asthma compared with white children (Harvard)Poverty and low-income status are linked with various adverse health outcomes, including shorter life expectancy, higher infant mortality rates, and higher death rates for the 14 leading causes of death (AAFP)When everyone can talk about these issues, we can come up with solutions with the hopes of developing a community experience that works for everyone.
The goal of our townhall:
Help support an informed and empowered communityBring together community members, community-based organizations, medical centers, local businesses, and local government officialsCreate an open and safe place where we can talk and come to solutions together
