Passionate About Respectful Care- Seeking Full or Part-Time Job

San Francisco CA

Description

Hi, I’m Rio (they/them), a childcare provider in San Francisco seeking a full-time or part-time position. I am also available for occasional gigs. I have over five years of experience caring for babies and young children. Before the pandemic, I was a teacher at PlayschoolSF, a play-based, Waldorf-inspired preschool. I also had regular babysitting clients who were very dear to me. My last job was a nanny share for two wonderful homeschooled children now aged 5 and 6, whom I have cared for since their infancy! I am fully bilingual, English/Spanish, and can provide Spanish immersion if desired. I have a BFA in Painting and love when my passion for making art intersects with my passion for being with children. My approach to childcare has been shaped by the work of Magda Gerber, founder of the RIE approach (Janet Lansbury is currently the best-known teacher of RIE). I am a graduate of the Foundations course offered by the RIE Institute. I would love to find work with a family who shares my commitment to respectful care. Some of my priorities and beliefs include: treating children with respect by speaking to them honestly and in a non-condescending tone, letting them know before touching their body (for example: ”it’s time to change your diaper, so I am going to lift you up now”), and not rushing their process. I also believe children are highly autonomous and capable. During playtime, I try to support them in their interests rather than pushing my own agenda, and give them a chance to problem-solve instead of rushing to do things for them. I think that it’s very important to allow children to feel their feelings, especially difficult ones like sadness or anger. I will do my best to support them in learning how to sit through those difficult feelings, instead of encouraging them to repress or distract themselves from them. I don’t believe in punishment. I do believe that setting clear and consistent limits helps children feel safe. And finally, I have a no-shame policy and try to be very aware of my tone when I speak to a child. My rate is $20 an hour for one child, and $30 for two. I don’t have a car or driver’s license, so I use public transport. I am fully vaccinated against Covid, including a booster shot. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions. I can provide references upon request.
