Description

"History, Current Use, and Future of Concrete" - Presented by Dr. Amanda BordelonConcrete is the largest production material in the world by volume and second to water for most widely used material. Cement and concrete have been used to build infrastructure since the days of civilized men around 1400 BC. While some structures have lived the test of time, today’s world offers different cements due to changing raw material chemistry and new challenges, such as aiming for stronger, faster, cheaper, and longer lasting concrete with less environmental impact. These new performance demands have driven engineers to try to design new types of concrete that either utilize new composite materials or manufacture new chemical additives for the concrete. Several of the new technologies that have been implemented or proposed are shared.About Dr. Amanda BordelonAmanda Bordelon, PhD, P.E., joined UVU faculty in the new Civil Engineering program in August 2018. She received a BS (2005), MS (2007), and PhD (2011) in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Illinois with emphases in transportation infrastructure and construction materials. Amanda was formerly a faculty member at the University of Utah for seven years, teaching civil materials and researching concrete testing. Her specialty is in fiber-reinforced concrete for overlay pavement design, specialty concrete materials, and evaluating test methods. She currently serves on committees through the American Concrete Institute (ACI) International and ACI Intermountain Chapter.______________________Roots of Knowledge is a sweeping stained-glass panorama of history and human drama. The intricate details incorporated into every window represent years of painstaking research on the events and people that shaped humankind from the days of wooly mammoths and cavemen to the iPhone. Created by Holdman Studios and installed at the UVU Fulton Library in 2016, this artistic landmark comprises 80 individual panes and took 12 years to complete. For information on where to park at UVU, please visit https://www.uvu.edu/parking/visitor-parking.html.
