Rotary Opens Doors at Shady Oaks Camp for Disabled Persons
Remember your days at Summer Camp? Being outdoors, activities and games, good cafeteria food and those evening assemblies? Remember opening the door to your cabin for the first time and meeting new friends? For 75 years this has been happening at Shady Oaks Camp. Except the door opening. Shady Oaks is a camp for Disabled Persons, many confined to a wheelchair. Getting around requires help from someone else and getting through those doors can be difficult, even with the one-on-one care that Shady Oaks campers receive.
With your help Rotary is working to overcome that challenge. Your participation in our Fall Beer Dinner can help provide automatic doors for the camp. Two doors have already been installed through a donation from a former camp worker. One camper shouted for joy the first time he was able to open the door to cafeteria on his own. Imagine if he could enter his cabin without help, or have access to the deck off the Activity Center.
The Lemont Homer Glen Rotary Club is seeking to raise funds to install additional automatic doors to help campers become more independent. Our goal is to provide funding for a minimum of 3 new doors.
