As many as 10,000 white men and boys descended on downtown Atlanta on September 22, 1906. Their targets were Black people, Black communities, and Black businesses. At least 25 Black men and women were lynched over the four days of terror from downtown Atlanta to East Point, though some accounts recorded up to 100 deaths.
By September 25, the mob reached the Black community of Brownsville (now South Atlanta). Residents of Brownsville worked together to protect their community and fend off the mob.
