Burglary Suspect Dies In Shootout At Homestead City Hall: Report

HOMESTEAD, FL — A burglary suspect was shot and killed in front of Homestead City Hall early Sunday morning, Miami-Dade police said in a news release. Homestead police responded to a home burglary in progress. When officers arrived, the suspect, later identified as La Garion Lamar Smith ran from the scene on foot, police said. Around 2:30 a.m., officers found Smith in front of city hall. He shot at them, and they returned fire, striking and killing the 27-year-old, police said. No officers were injured during the incident, though one of them was shot through their pant leg. Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
