We all may feel overwhelmed by our day-to-day living and full schedules at times. There are tasks to be done, people to care for, and little time for ourselves. What do we do about it? Some may call it the Oxygen Mask Rule: if you are on a plane, and the cabin loses pressure, oxygen masks will fall from above. You are to place yours on yourself before trying to help others. Self-care.
The term “self-care” tends to get a bad reputation. Many think that the term strictly implies spa days and bubble baths, but this is far from reality. True self-care demands making the tough decisions on how to preserve your mind, body, and spirit. These decisions take practice and dedication. It can be detrimental to overlook skills you can utilize to care for your whole person. Without them, your energy level, patience, relationships, and productivity may flounder.
Self-care is defined as any intentional action you take to improve your physical, mental, and emotional health. What self-care is not is anything that’s an overindulgence likely to cause you long-term issues. Everyone has different needs, and it's important to know what yours are.
