Objectives: Define the most current research on veganism and eating disorders through an objective, yet discerning, lens. Identify real-time shifts in clinical perspectives based on informal surveys and client experiences.Describe personal biases unique to the treatment of people with eating disorders who also practice veganism.Description: With more than 25% of young adult Americans currently following a vegan eating plan, the impact of veganism cannot be ignored. Sales of vegan foods are exploding in the marketplace at a rate 10 times faster than total food sales. Unfortunately, research on the intersection of veganism and eating disorders is not keeping up with the popularity explosion. In fact, a closer look at vegetarianism and veganism research quoted most frequently may reflect overgeneralizations and misinformation, which impacts what clinicians and clients believe. Can veganism be followed by a client with an eating disorder without negatively impacting the client’s ability to recover? Is veganism the root cause, or the manifestation, of disordered eating behaviors? As clinicians, how do we navigate these questions and guide clients to discover their true motivations, without bringing in our own biases or beliefs? Join Tammy Beasley, MS, RDN, CEDS-S for a collaborative conversation to explore the controversies around veganism and eating disorders. This presentation will provide personal and professional clarity to inform treatment and support your clients as they work towards full recovery.
