MANATEE COUNTY, FL — Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells was sworn in for his second term Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff's office tweeted. The Hon. Gilbert Smith, Jr. presided over a small ceremony for the sheriff's family and command staff.
At the event, Wells, who ran unopposed, thanked his family and staff for their support over the last four years.
"They say that a good leader is surrounded by good people. Well, then I must be awesome because all of you are awesome, and I am able do what I do each and every day because of you," he posted to the sheriff's office Facebook page. "I can't stand up here by myself and do everything that is required in this community. There's a lot of challenges each day. We will continue to take those challenges head on and do what is necessary no matter what comes out way."

Before this, he was chief of the Palmetto Police Department from 2010 to 2015 and spent 21 years with the Florida Highway Patrol, working his way up to the rank of sergeant.
His father, Charlie Wells, was also a Manatee County sheriff. The elder Wells served in the position from 1984 to 2007.
