Jazz in the Courtyard (Wells Hall) continues this next Saturday, September 24, at 7:30pm, featuring Cassio Vianna, Jazz Piano, and Jeff Chang, Saxophone. Suggested $10 donation will be gratefully accepted at the door. The PNW is fortunate to have a thriving jazz community, of which Christ Church’s con-certs are just one small part. “...We residents of the Pacific Northwest are very lucky. The ecosystem is every-thing, and all the inter-connected activity is what makes any art form vi-brant and alive. Many people, when they think of jazz and modern creative music, might think of New York, but our area has one of the most fertile and active communities in the country.” (Luthringer, Andrew. “Alive and Well: Jazz & Community in the PNW.” Earshot Jazz, 31 Oct. 2017) Indeed, the world-renowned Earshot Jazz Festival, which takes place all around Seattle this year from October 8 through November 6, features artists from a wide variety of jazz genres, including big band music, gospel, and even today’s hip hop. Cassio Vianna, who is the Director of Jazz Studies at PLU, is not only a jazz pianist, he is also an award-winning composer, music educator and jazz scholar. His most recent album, the CD Infância (Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra 2017) features his recent compositions for jazz big band. He performs regularly with the PLU Regency Jazz Ensemble, the Tom Bergeron Brasil Band, the Vianna Bergeron Brazilian Jazz, and as an accompanist with singer Sherry Alves. In addition to being a freelance saxophonist all around the PNW, Jeff Chang is a frequent clinician and master class teacher, and is the band director at Decatur High School in Federal Way, along with acting as the Jazz Curriculum Officer for the Washington Music Educator Association.
