WASHINGTON, DC — Hours after a lockdown of the Capital building on Wednesday U.S. Rep. Thomas Suozzi called to be allowed back to the House Floor to certify the presidential election. "We must get back to the house floor and certify Joe Biden is the 46th president," he wrote on Facebook just before 5 p.m. Suozzi, a Democrat from Glen Cove, was inside the Capitol Wednesday as protesters breached the building to protest the certification of votes for President-elect Joe Biden. In an interview with Newsday, Suozzi said he and his colleagues were ordered to take cover on the floor, and that he heard gunfire from inside the chamber and saw Capitol police draw their weapons. He heard banging on the doors and saw detained protesters laying on the ground when he was escorted to safety, Newsday reported. "The doors have been locked as protesters have breached Capitol Police security," Suozzi wrote on Facebook at about 2:30 p.m. "I believe that debate will begin again soon. We must simply rely on our values and get through this day. Do not be afraid."Suozzi, a two-term congressman, thanked Capitol police. Earlier today, Suozzi posted, "Everything will be ok" next to an American flag. On Tuesday, he decried a move by a contingent of Republican colleagues to block the certification of votes for President-elect Biden. Suozzi said there has been no evidence of election fraud and some of his colleagues are violating their constitutional duty, calling it "sad" and "inappropriate." "We'll get through this; we will just keep pushing forward together," he said.
