Description

This October, The Frida Cinema is proud to present Beautiful Monsters: A Guillermo del Toro Film Retrospective and Tribute Art Show, featuring all eleven of the Academy Award-winning director’s feature films; three acclaimed films he produced; and seven films that served to inspire him. The series continues at The Frida Cinema with The Devil's Backbone, a ghost story that blends horror and historical fiction. In 1939, three years after the end of the Spanish Civil War, a 10-year-old boy named Carlos is left behind at an orphanage in the middle of nowhere. Young Carlos finds comfort and safety in curt but considerate headmistress Carmen and kindly Professor Casares as he deals with bullying children, cruel caretaker Jacinto, and disturbing visits by the ghost of a boy named Santi. As Carlos finds out, Santi was brutally murdered the day a bomb was dropped on the school’s grounds – and whereas the bomb didn’t detonate, the ghost of Santi nevertheless latches on to Carlos with an ominous message, warning the terrified boy, “Many of you will die…” This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
