Detroit Audubon is hosting a clean up event at Callahan Park to keep the area looking its best. Our focus will be removing invasive species such as burdock, thistle and quackgrass and planting some additional flowers around the park signs. As usual we will have some trash pick up too.
Since this event is in the fall it is the perfect time to collect seeds! We will have some envelopes available so everyone can take some native flower seeds to spread at home.
We will have some supplies but we appreciate anyone bringing their own work gloves, trowels, shovels, loppers, hedge trimmers, and wheel barrows for moving weeds.
There is no bathroom on site but there is a porta-john available for use about a block away, if you need it, please just ask.
Callahan Park is part of the Detroit Bird City project to restore native bird and pollinator habitat in disused Detroit city parks. Before restoration Callahan was indistinguishable from a vacant lot with overgrown grass and plenty of trash. In 2019 we planted the two acre park with 39 different kinds of native flowers and 6 varieties of native grasses. The meadow has established beautifully and in the spring of 2022 we planted an additional two acres of meadow to double the size of Callahan Park. We have reached over 100 species of birds recorded at Callahan Park and several species nesting there! We are so happy to see wildlife moving in and have overwhelming support from the local community.
See below for more information about Callahan Park and the community benefits.
We ask that if you have been exposed to anyone with Covid-19 or are feeling unwell to please stay home.
