Nothing in the college admissions process prepares high school students for the changes they will face as they transition from high school to living independently in college. There can also be a considerable learning curve for parents who have helped support and advocate for their children for 18 years. How do you learn to be a college parent? Join us at the Uptown JCC on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. as Andrea Malkin Brenner, Ph.D. shares lessons drawn from 25 years of experience as a college professor, as the creator of American University’s first-year experience program, and as the faculty director of AU's University College program.
Parents of college-bound high school juniors and seniors will not want to miss this informative discussion, which will focus on how they can begin to lessen their daily involvement in their students’ lives and simultaneously increase their support as students become self-reliant and college-ready. Parents will finish the evening with a complete list of the critical life skills teens should master before leaving for college (and tricks for teaching these skills while still in high school). Hint: It's much more than learning to do laundry.
This event is free and open to the community. A reservation is requested.
While students are welcome, the conversation is geared toward parents.
