Wastewater Overflows Into Prince George's Creek: Report

FORT WASHINGTON, MD — About 12,384 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into a Fort Washington creek last Wednesday, a Prince George's County water supplier said in a press release. The statement added that the spill lasted from 2:12 p.m. until 9:05 p.m. "It is important to note that the water and wastewater systems are separate," Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Water said in the release. This overflow is NOT affecting WSSC Water's drinking water." WSSC Water noted that the accident started when a private contractor, who was not working for the water company, struck an 8-inch sewer line during a construction dig near the 12200 block of Clear Creek Drive. The water officials added that they immediately sent repair crews to reroute sewage and put up signs, warning residents to avoid the area. WSSC Water also noted that it notified the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Prince George's County Health Department. "WSSC Water is committed to protecting the health of the public and the environment," the provider said. "With more than 5,600 miles of sewer mains throughout its service area, WSSC Water appreciates notifications from citizens if a sewer overflow or water main break is suspected."
