The Korean American Association of Chicago The Korean American Association of Chicago Based on real stories and historical interviews, we hope the audience resonates with the story of a heartwarming immigrant family spanning three generations dealing with the joys and sorrows of immigrating and settling down. With deep gratitude to the first generation who sacrificed and paved the way for the next generation, we hope this time of sharing the story of Korean Americans in Chicago will serve as a driving force for all our community into the future. Better Together! Synopsis The story begins at the Gimpo airport in 1985 as Kyungae’s family immigrates to the U.S. (Chicago). Kyungae’s father is a devoted and diligent man who once had a dream of becoming a trot singer. Her mother is a warm and loving person who sacrifices everything she has for her family and children. Kyungae is the oldest daughter who is thoughtful in nature despite her young age. Kyung Jin is the energetic and naive middle child. Kyung Sun is the youngest daughter who is yet to be born. As the family leaves their home country, they are full of excitement yet anxiety due to starting a new life in Chicago. In the states, Kyungae’s oldest aunt who arrived first to the U.S. was a nurse who was previously dispatched to Germany in the 70s and then moved to the U.S. to fulfill her American Dream. The story unfolds in Chicago as Kyungae’s family owns a cleaners on Lawrence Avenue and adopts to their new environment and life from the 80s to the present. What will life be like for the family in 2022? --- 2022년은 시카고 한인회 60년이 되는 해입니다. 60년이라는 긴 시간을 되돌아 보며 한인회와 한인 이민자들의 역사를 함께 나누고자 이 공연을 기획하였습니다. 시카고에 이민와서 정착하며 겪는 희노애락을 다룬 3세대에 걸친 한 가정의 이야기를 통해 단순히 춤추고 노래하는 자리가 아닌 나와 우리 이웃의 삶을 함께 나누는 귀한 자리가 되기를 희망합니다. 이 공연을 관람후 집에 돌아가시는 차안에서, 혹은 집에서 세대와 세대가 나눌 이야기가 풍성해 지실것입니다. 끝으로 시카고에서 한국인으로써 긍지를 가지고 살아갈수있게 노력해주신 이민1세대 분들에게는 감사와 존경을 보내며, 1.5세대와 2세분들에게는 우리 부모님과 시카고 한인의 역사를 공유하며 미래를 향해 더욱 힘차게 달려나갈 원동력이 되는 시간이 되기를 희망합니다. 줄거리 1985년. 김포공항. 경애네 가족이 시카고로 이민을 떠난다. 성실하고 부지런하며, 언젠가 트롯가수가 되겠다는 꿈을 안고사는 아빠, 자식을 위해 자신을 희생하는것을 당연하게 생각하는 사랑이 넘치고 따뜻한 엄마, 어린나이지만 속이 깊은 첫째딸 경애, 천방지축 어디로 튈지 모르는 천진난만 둘째 경진, 곧 태어날 막내. 다섯식구는 미국이라는 낯선 나라에 대한 설레임 반, 걱정반을 안고 시카고로 출발하며 이야기는 시작된다. 독일에서 간호사를 하다가 아메리칸 드림을 꿈구며 시카고에 먼저 이민 온 경애의 이모덕분에 경애가족은 시카고 로렌스길에서 세탁소를 운영하며 한인사회에도 잘 적응하며 살아간다. 2022년, 과연 경애가족은 어떤 모습으로 살아가고 있을까… Admission: FREE (https://bettertogethermusical.eventbrite.com) Korean with English subtitles Questions?
