Virtual 'Coping With Dementia' Program Planned At Hamden Library

Press release from Hamden Public Library: Jan. 5, 2021 Dementia can sound scary. But it can be less intimidating when you know its symptoms and the resources available to you and your family. Find out what you should do if a loved one has it. Attend a free, presentation by Dianne Davis titled "Coping with Dementia: Strategies for Families". This virtual program is sponsored by the Hamden Public Library. It will take place on Thursday, February 4, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 7:45 pm. Dianne is the Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Yale. She will talk about the stages of dementia, define the patient characteristics and problems within each stage, and discuss family coping strategies as well as community resources. Dementia is defined as a set of symptoms which indicate the gradual loss of thinking, remembering, reasoning, and language abilities. It is caused by damage to brain cells. It is estimated that one out of every six women and one out of every ten men living past the age of 55 will develop dementia. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, and is a leading cause of disability in the United States. Currently, it is estimated that the prevalence of dementia among adults aged 65 and older in the U.S. is 11%, or 5.2 million people (www.healthypeople.gov). The presenter Dianne Davis, RN, MSN, is a graduate of the Yale School of Nursing. She worked for many years with individuals with dementia and their families at the Adler Geriatric Assessment Center at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association and for the New Haven Walk to End Alzheimer's. This virtual program is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
