Heat is nothing new to the Southeast, but a warming climate is giving rise to new challenges. North Carolina can expect to see more frequent and more intense heat events, including longer spans of extremely hot days that threaten human life. We can also expect to see warmer nights and higher minimum temperatures. These changes are creating a growing and inequitable public health hazard for North Carolinians.
In this game participants will role play city planners and consider potential solutions for a fictional town experiencing more extreme heat events due to climate change. This in-person game will take the form of a deliberative public forum facilitated by Max Cawley.
Max Cawley is an educator, researcher, evaluator, game designer, and science communicator with the Museum of Life & Science in Durham, NC. Max works with researchers and scientists to develop and design games to communicate complex science—on topics ranging from arctic geopolitics to standing in lines. Max is interested in the learning that occurs through playing games and believes in their potential transformative power as a tool for deep engagement in complicated topics.
This event is co-sponsored by the Climate Change & Society program and is part of the Global Change Games series.
