The Paul Martin Jazz Quintet features the best in jazz standards! Consisting of vocals, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, the quintet produces some of the finest and most tasteful jazz in the area. Bassist Paul Martin serves as the Minister of Worship and Music at First Lutheran in Shelby, and is the new Music Director at the Richland Academy of the Arts. He has been leading area bands for the past 26 years, and is an accomplished composer and arranger. Paul is the leader of the Artistic Jazz Orchestra and the Stardust Dance Band, and also plays bass for Percy Hall, John Kennedy, and the David Berry Country Band. Our vocalist, Kelly Knowlton, is an accomplished jazz singer and an area favorite. She serves as the pit director for many of the musicals at the Renaissance Theater. She can heard singing with the Paul Martin Jazz Quintet, the Stardust Dance Band, the Artistic Jazz Orchestra, and Just Jazz. Our Saxophonist/Clarinetist/Flutist is Byron Rooker from Columbus. Byron has toured with Paul Anka and Doc Severinsen. Byron has performed with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra (formerly the Jazz Arts Group) since it foundation in 1973, and also performs in a duo with guitarist Stan Smith, Matt Ellis’ Standard Time, and the rock ‘n’ roll band the JuJu Bees. Considered to be one of Columbus’ most accomplished musicians and arrangers, he is also an amateur photographer, a fanatical reader and a life-long student of philosophy and comparative religions. Lanny Gooding, our pianist, is a magically musician. Lanny had played professionally for many year in California, but has returned to Ohio to share his special style of jazz piano. Lanny can be heard with many groups in the area; including the Artistic Jazz Orchestra, the Stardust Dance Band, the Paul Martin Jazz Quartet, the John Kennedy Band, the Percy Hall Band, and the Rib Ticklers. Steve Berry, our drummer, is one of the finest jazz drummer in the area. He is the guy you want in the drum chair of any jazz band. Steve and Paul have band mates for 30 years! Steve is a drummer’s drummer. Steve can be heard with many bands in the area in all of Paul’s bands, the Percy Hall Band, Rare Vintage, and with his son David Berry, performing great old school country music.
