Join us for a tour and discussion of the history of this Civil War-era chapel located in the churchyard of St. Paul's Church in Newburyport. The chapel interior has been almost unchanged since its consecration in April 1863. St. Anna’s Chapel's fourteen stained glass windows, created by Henry Sharp Studios of New York City, are some of the earliest examples of stained glass in New England and America. The original hand pump organ, constructed by William Stevens of Boston, is original and intact and has undergone a complete restoration to its original full range of sound. The chapel was built in 1862 in memory of Anna Marie Horton, who died of tuberculosis in 1857. Anna was the only child of the Rev. William Horton, the rector of St. Paul’s Church, prior to the commencement of the Civil War.
The tour and discussion will last one hour. Gather at the front doors of the chapel in the churchyard. St. Paul’s Church was founded in 1711 and is the oldest continuous Episcopal parish in Massachusetts. The church is located at 166 High Street in Newburyport. Call 978-697-4084 for more information.
