Abstract: Embodied therapy provides an opportunity for individuals to safely connect to
their emotions that arise from their body’s sensations, and it teaches individuals how to
listen to their body’s needs. Body awareness and connection to sensory self are critical
components to the recovery process. When everyday movements are transformed into
expressive movements, individuals release and externalize their feelings. Through this
process, it becomes possible to identify connections between self-expressive movement
and familiar movement patterns in one’s daily life that may underlie the eating disorder.
Recovery becomes increasingly feasible when individuals with eating disorders are
challenged to live fully in their bodies. Through this presentation, participants will learn
about the benefits of embodied therapy for people in eating disorder recovery, common
movement and somatic patterns associated with eating disorder behaviors, and embodied
interventions that may support their clients struggling with eating disorders.
