Grauer, a Kansas City native, is the McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture and Curator of Cowboy Collections and Western Art at The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. In his presentation, Grauer will discuss the creation of the Kansas City Stock Yards and the American Royal National Stock and Horse Show consequently demonstrating the multicultural connections that have contributed to the success of Kansas City today. At its height, the Kansas City Stockyards and the Kansas City Livestock Exchange were the second busiest in the nation and were the primary engines driving the economic development of Kansas City. The Kansas City Stockyards played a key role in Kansas City’s emergence as an agribusiness and cultural leader in the United States. Cattle receipts at the stockyards jumped by a million head in two years after railroads reached the American Southwest in 1887. By 1900, Kansas City had cornered the entire Western American cattle market. Consequently, the workforce numbered nearly 35,000 people from every culture still represented in Kansas City today: African Americans, Latinx, Asians, and Europeans worked at the Kansas City Stockyards and the Kansas City Livestock Exchange, and supported businesses, and built families and communities because of the Stock Yards. Led by Historian-in-Residence Dr. Gene T. Chávez, Nuestro Legado is a series of programs that examines historical events and personal stories that are part of or related to current exhibits. These programs are intended to enhance the museum visit. For more information, please contact Glenn North, Director of Inclusive Learning & Creative Impact, at [email protected].
