WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs resident Annie Flavin's 9-year-old daughter asked her what her parents would do if they lacked the money to pay bills and buy necessities.
That line of questioning ultimately led to Annie Flavin's children and others to go caroling last month to raise money for a local food pantry.
In a Facebook post, Flavin wrote about the children's effort. A group of 7- to 12-year-olds, she said, wore elf hats and Christmas lights for two nights as they caroled around town (all masked and distanced).
"It was my daughter's idea, but it would not have been possible without friends who share her empathy and compassion, mothers who figure out how to get it done, and a village full of people who were up for it all," Flavin wrote. "The girls led in all the ways, and the boys stepped right in to follow their lead."
They raised more than $2,200 for the Westchester Food Pantry.
Flavin's daughter, Rose Flavin, led the effort with the help of her two brothers, Charlie and Teddy Flavin. Their friends, Arden Follstad, Amelia McCargo, and Sloane Groetsema, joined in. A number of other children took part for one of the nights.
