Cantata 8, Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben (Dearest God, When Shall I Die?) was composed in 1724 and performed at the Sunday service at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig on September 24. The opening chorus and closing chorale are based on a beautiful hymn melody by Daniel Vetter, one of Bach's predecessors in Leipzig. The work features SATB soloists and lovely oboe d'amore and virtuosic flute solos.
