Description
Join the goThere Therapeutic Yoga Workshop presented by Gail Martin You will learn to listen to your body, alleviate restrictions that cause dull pain and/or tension and learn to improve flexibility, range of motion and strength. g o T h e r e Therapeutic Yoga was inspired by a chronic musculoskeletal injury. The techniques are presented by yoga instructor, Gail Martin, who carefully followed the paths of her own muscular and movement restrictions—the tightness and pain sensations that arose from adhesions or scar tissue that begged for attention. These areas, which are not typically addressed in a regular yoga practice, had restrictions that needed to be visited by some form of movement, whether it was stretch, range of motion, strength, or attended to with certain do-it-yourself body work techniques, such as myo-fascial release, sports massage, reflexology, gentle rocking, and stretch-reflex. The program has been developed over the past year, with much of its form culminating more recently, when quarantine time necessitated a strong and regular yoga practice. There are basic principles that accompany this practice. The concept is to go to restrictions in the spine, shoulders and hips—the main aspects that move the body and start to loosen, soften and release stuck connective tissue that inhibits movement. For the most part, the spine moves in the direction of the head, forming a circle in whichever forward, back or side direction it is moving. When the spine is straight, the tail bone is also lengthened, so that the spine is like an arrow. The hips and shoulders will learn to “walk” in seated, table, and supine position, thereby revealing restriction in any of those joint structures and along the spine. Stretch-reflex is the most commonly used body work technique. Traction and suspension are implemented as a method of creating space and strength. The floor and body are used as a template to assess patterns of tension and restriction. Movement heals—an important attribute because when joint mobility and muscular efficacy is lessened by connective tissue restriction, it can be enhanced with the attentiveness of g o T h e r e Therapeutic Yoga. As a result of doing this practice participants can expect to feel looser. And over a short period of time with regular practice, one will enhance flexibility, strength, heighten body awareness, and improve bio mechanics. The body awareness gained is from experiencing and noting the tension, strength, and weakness patterns that arise. We g o T h e r e to work on improving all movement—not just with the therapeutic yoga practice, but also in bringing attention to how we move throughout our daily lives. Any connective tissue restrictions that hinder how we move throughout the day will become enhanced during exercise. This practice stresses the importance of adopting mindful awareness for how we move and how to support hindered patterns so that we become more efficient in all movement, including when we train for fitness or sports. About Gail Martin: Gail Martin, LMT, CYT has been practicing massage therapy since 1992, and teaching yoga since 2006. Gail has been an endurance athlete since 1985 beginning with triathlons followed by marathons and ultra running. In 2018, a series of falls/mishaps ultimately culminated in a rather prolonged injury that affected her back, hip and knee. By December 2019, the opposite hip became an acute, compensatory injury with tight connective tissue along the spine weakening the hip and knee from the original injury. Although physical therapy was prescribed for the acute hip injury and spine, the older, more chronic injury still needed to be addressed. A regular yoga practice with this purpose was developed, and g o T h e r e Therapeutic Yoga was born.
