In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Kansas City had a robust jazz scene - as it does now - that included the talents of a young pianist Steve Million (from Boonville, MO), woodwind specialist David Brandom (Liberty, MO), drummer Ron Vincent (Rhode Island). These three would combine in various combinations with Stan Kessler (trumpet) and Gerald Spaits (bass) to create some memorable music and bands including Stan Kessler’s Flat Five, the Stan Kessler Quartet (who played a 5 night a week steady at The Point), Peligro (a Latin Jazz band), Four Friends (an all original music quartet with Steve Cardenas on guitar), Baby Leroy (a funk dance band with the late great Jimmy Dykes), to name a few. These formative years were very important to each of these players who have remained good friends and musical colleagues all these years later. In fact, last year the group formerly known as Four Friends released their critically acclaimed recording “What I Meant To Say” on Origin Records.
So the creative fires are still very much alive and burning bright for these five jazz musicians who are getting together again for a very special night at Uptown Lounge. There will be a mixture of standard jazz tunes with original compositions for this very special night which celebrates the unique and enduring spirit of Kansas City jazz.
