WATSONVILLE, CA — A driver may face charges after they crashed into a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputy's car, then fled the scene.
A deputy was parked in his patrol car around 10:30 p.m. Saturday while conducting a check near Thurwachter and West Beach roads when a car driving toward him smashed into the front driver's side of the car, said Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Ashley Keehn. The patrol car sustained minor damage, but the deputy was not injured.
The driver sped off, prompting a pursuit. California Highway Patrol assisted the sheriff's office.
The driver ultimately crashed the car and suffered injuries, Keehn said. They were hospitalized at a facility outside of Santa Cruz County.
The sheriff's office has not released the name of the driver, as an investigation is ongoing to determine what charges they may face. The driver has not been arrested.
