Santa Monica Begins Intermittent McClure Tunnel Upgrade Closures

SANTA MONICA, CA — City officials in Santa Monica issued a reminder to residents that McClure Tunnel would begin closing for intermittent, overnight lighting upgrades on Monday. The closure of the heavily trafficked tunnel will likely impact traffic on the I-10 Freeway. Drivers can expect the tunnel to close each night for at least the first week of January. Nearby ramps may close as well. Caltrans has planned the work from the I-10 Freeway at Lincoln Boulevard to the Broadway Pedestrian Overcrossing on Highway 1, PCH. Crews will upgrade the lighting system in the McClure Tunnel to LED lights to improve visibility for drivers. It will warn drivers to slow down as they approach the tunnel. The project also includes adding a speed feedback sign, a high-friction surface treatment to the pavement inside the tunnel, and an upgrade to overhead signage in the project area.
