Description

This October, The Frida Cinema is proud to present Beautiful Monsters: A Guillermo del Toro Film Retrospective and Tribute Art Show, featuring all eleven of the Academy Award-winning director’s feature films; three acclaimed films he produced; and seven films that served to inspire him. The series continues at The Frida Cinema with Pan's Labyrinth, del Toro's unforgettable dark fantasy for adults. The film finds a young girl named Ofelia traveling with her pregnant mother Carmen to the Spanish countryside after the Spanish Civil War has ended. Waiting for them there is Carmen’s new husband Vidal, a ruthless nationalist army captain. As Ofelia’s mother becomes more frail from the pregnancy and her new stepfather focuses on stopping a guerilla uprising, Ofelia is left to her imagination, which soon finds her wandering into a mysterious labyrinth inhabited by a faun known as Pan, who is immediately certain upon meeting her that Ofelia is a lost princess from the Underworld. Pan informs her that in order to return to her kingdom, she must complete three tasks to prove her royalty – but if she fails, she can never return back home to her true parents ever.
